the Gopher 3
|
I wanted to have the feet resemble the ones from the toy. I got some general design advice on how to make the "shoes" from Daren again. |
I went to a shoe supply company and picked up these big pieces of crepe sole with a diamond pattern on the bottom, because Daren said they have the best traction. I also picked up a can or two of Barge Cement. This stuff is really strong, and once you've joined your foam surfaces to the crepe sole, they don't come off -- ever. For the same reasons I used this stuff to glue down some cheap slippers for my feet to fit into. |

These were essentially 4 piece constructions. First, was the sides...
...followed by the center and a small half-ring at the back along the top. I also carved the edges to make the top of the foot more curved. Then, I cut some narrow bands for each foot to serve as collars for the legs of the gopher to fit over
Once I had the
body and feet done, I put them on to see how it looked so far.
(Yeah, go ahead and laugh -- Nora did, too.) Overall,
I was relatively pleased with the curve of the belly and the slight
widening of the shoulders I'd built in. I also had to
keep in mind that the fur would make it look even bigger, once it was
put on.
Note the split down the back for the zipper, later. |
